12/23/2023 0 Comments 12 volt solar charger![]() ![]() If you only need a charge and disconnect it before dark you don't even need a diode to block it from draining over night. If you hook a panel up temporarily, you could cheat up to 40 watts without hurting the battery for a day. Small panels like these maintainers, under 10 watts, don't need a charge controller, because they're incapable of overcharging a battery. If possible, get some small used aluminum framed panels for $.50/W and a real charge controller that will cost more than the panel. The industry has moved to higher voltages, so any 12V panels are a niche market anymore. The small junk one probably didn't last five years. They were all covered in algae, but cleaned up the good ones still charge, and will probably be replaced with a few 2-400W panels, because panels are so much cheaper these days. I was working on a 90's RV that came with a set of three 40 watt aluminum frame glass panels for the "house" batteries, and a 12"x12" plastic panel for the engine battery. Not so good ones like these cheap plastic little maintainers are junk. Solar panels are as reliable as they make them, the good ones will mostly last 20-40 years and put out 80% or better at that age, that's not projection, they've been around that long. ![]()
